CBW Automation, the high-speed robot maker in Fort Collins, Colo., showed its new case unpacking automation for lids and containers at NPE2012, and Milacron LLC ran an injection press with CBW's new telescoping side-entry robot.
CBW also rolled out robots for in-mold labeling of medical syringes.
CBW used a Milacron press for IML for the syringes barrels on a 16-cavity mold made by Tech Mold Inc. and Mold-Masters Ltd., using CBW's cut-in-place roll-fed IML automation.
CBW said in-mold labeling can combat counterfeiters by allowing pharmaceutical brand owners to create a label with special inks that can only be revealed under special black lights, or individualy coded. The label becomes part of the barrel, making it impossible to remove.
At Milacron's booth, the press maker demonstrated CBW's new telescoping side robot, called the TSE-500. In the work cell, a 550-ton PowerPAK all-electric press was running thin-wall container lids on a two-by-four-cavity stack mold. The robot rapidly telescopes into the mold to grab the parts, then telescopes back out. CBW said it is fasted than conventional top entry robots, and has a similar-size footprint.
CBW also has entered a new market: a complete, integrated system for automated case unpacking at the product filling line.
“The standard way of unloading traditional parts will not work with these modern irregular-shaped designs,” said Jim Swim, CBW's business manager. “As product designs are trending toward these non-standard shapes such as square and rectangular, the ability to remove these parts from cartons or gaylords is a serious challenge for end use and filling-line companies.”
CBW's unloading equipment is designed to work with the company's case loading automation equipment.
