Hard-to-open plastic clamshell packages get no love from consumers, but this week they really hit rock bottom. Plastic clamshells have been declared the worst-designed product of all time. The news comes from Quora.com, a question-and-answer website founded by two former Facebook employees. Quora asked its members "What is the worst piece of design ever done?" There were many products mentioned -- punchcard ballots, TV remotes -- but the clamshell was the runaway "winner." Quota member Anita Schillhorn wrote: "Design should help solve problems. This packaging attempts to solve the problem of theft, but creates new problems that are far worse, principally irritating your own customers." The poll got some publicity yesterday when Rebecca J. Rosen wrote about it for The Atlantic. We know clamshells aren't all bad, and Quora members do, too. They've even got a separate Q&A on the topic, "What are the arguments for plastic clamshell packaging?"
