The new building is connected to the company's existing manufacturing space with a corridor. TomKen also has a separate warehouse, bringing its total space up to 55,000 square feet.
TomKen launched in 1960 as a mold maker and added molding to its operations in 2000. That side of the business has steadily expanded through recent years.
“We're pretty much a turnkey company now,”
The bulk of TomKen's molding is for functional auto parts, such as components for door handle assemblies and heating and cooling vents. It recently has received business from a cross-section of customers for parts for the 2013 model year, prompting the expansion. Production on those parts launches this summer.
The firm now has 22 presses. The bulk of them range in size from 100 tons to 400 tons. The new 1,100-ton press is the company's biggest and gives TomKen more production flexibility,
The company currently has 46 employees, but expects to add up to six more as it brings in more business.
