New polylactic acid alloys perform like engineering plastics while delivering up to 40 percent biocontent, according to Teknor Apex Co.
Terraloy BP 70010 and 70011 compounds provide strength, stiffness and heat distortion temperatures comparable to standard polycarbonate, ABS and PC/ABS blends at 36 to 40 percent biocontent, the Pawtucket, R.I., firm claims. They allow high biocontent in electronic housings and other components without sacrificing key mechanical and thermal properties. They allow reduced greenhouse gas emissions in manufacturing cycles.
Injection molded housings handles, medical equipment and consumer products are target applications for the new biomaterials.
