Kevin and Carole Chase -- the husband-and-wife owners of the Chase Plastics Services Inc. material distribution firm -- have received the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for product distributors in Michigan and northwest Ohio. The Chases were among 36 regional semi-finalists chosen from a pool of about 1,700 entrepreneurs nominated for the award. In their region, the Chases were selected from a group of 55. The national winner will be named Nov. 17 at a ceremony in Palm Springs, Calif. Winners were chosen based on several factors, including how successful their business has been, its everyday employee practices and its impact on the community, according to Ernst & Young. "Carole and I are humbled by the support that we've received over the years from our loyal customers, suppliers and, of course, Chase Plastics team members," Kevin Chase said in a June 26 news release. "Without them, this award would not have been possible." The Chases founded the Clarkston, Mich.-based firm in 1992, with Kevin making sales calls and delivering materials from the trunk of his car, and Carole handling administrative tasks. Today, the business employs 86 and has annual sales of $165 million, selling 6,400 grades of specialty, engineering and commodity resins and compounds from 33 suppliers. Chase Plastics Services stocks material at its own warehouse in South Bend, Ind., as well as at more than 30 public warehouses nationwide. "From day one, our philosophy has always been to provide our customers with service so 'outrageous' that they talk about it and recommend us to others," Carole Chase said in the release. Winning the award continues a busy year for Chase. The firm has hired 12 new employees so far this year after adding 13 in 2011. The firm also recently added two new bulk packaging lines and a new computerized blender at its warehouse in South Bend. New computer software also is helping Chase's sales team to more efficiently manage quotes and to access pricing, order history and real-time inventory data.
