The Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology in Pfinztal, Germany, is using a new ZE 30/KE 60 Schaumtandex line from KraussMaffei Berstorff for research into foamed plastics.
This line is designed to make new products in the direct-expansion process, for material modifications and develop new processes.
This year, ICT researchers have used the laboratory-scale extruder to product directly foamed, semi-finished products. Leaders of the institute are interested in foams for building, packaging and automotive applications.
ICT already has done various projects using cellulose or polylactic acid-based particle foam, and now researchers want to transfer that know-how to extruded foams. Other projects will examine foamed PET and materials with nanoscale reinforcing agents.
KraussMaffei Berstorff is based in Hanover, Germany. Its U.S. headquarters, Krauss-Maffei Corp., is in Florence, Ky.
