PITTSBURGH (July 6, 1 p.m. ET) — PPG Industries has launched full-scale production of its Opticor material for aircraft windows.
The proprietary material is used for the outer layer of a passenger cabin window, laminated to a stretched acrylic core with a glass panel layer for the interior surface, Pittsburgh-based PPG said in a June 27 news release. Opticor is now in use on the Gulfstream G650 business jet.
PPG had started pilot production at a technology center near Pittsburgh prior to moving full production to its aerospace facility in Sylmar, Calif.
Opticor is available in a range of thicknesses, and PPG is developing technology to form it into complex shapes, the company said.
