ROGERS, MINN. (Updated July 10, 3:45 p.m. ET) — Metro Mold & Design Inc. already was doing regular business for the medical industry, with molding, mold making and a Class 7 clean room for assembly.
But the Rogers, Minn.-based company knew it needed to do more if it wanted to break through and win more business.
“If we wanted to be in the medical market, we had to make a statement, and our prior facility didn't back up that statement,” said President and CEO Tim Holland.
With its newly-opened $5.2 million dedicated medical manufacturing operation in Brooklyn Park, Minn., the company has made that statement, Holland said in a July 10 telephone interview.
The 100,000-square-foot building has Class 8 clean room for molding, a second Class 8 clean room for machining and a Class 7 clean room for assembly.
“It's a large investment to get up and get going, but it moves us forward,” Holland said.
MMD Medical replaces a rented facility where the company previous located its assembly. MMD was able to design the new site for state-of-the-art medical manufacturing today, and with flexibility built in for future growth.
The company moved existing presses into the new building.
A five-year growth plan calls for the site to have 250 employees at full capacity.
In addition to Brooklyn Park and Rogers, MMD also has production in Little Falls, Minn., with five different sites in total. It has injection molding, thermoset molding, extrusion blow molding and mold making.
For the medical industry, it specializes in producing parts for medical devices used in cardiovascular and orthopedic practices as well as drug delivery systems.
With its capabilities in molding, mold making and machining, it can produce parts from start to finish that meet regulations and help customers simplify use by integrating operations. Holland said the new facility is essential to future growth in the industry.
