BRUSSELS (July 12, 1:30 p.m. ET) — European Commission officials are drafting a comprehensive paper on reducing how plastic waste damages the environment, as pressure rises for it to take action to curtail the impact of plastic bags.
European Union (EU) environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik has written to the European Parliament saying the paper “should help find a strategic response to the environmentally responsible and resource efficient use of plastic including its end of life phase.”
Potocnik was responding to a question from Belgian socialist Member of the European Parliament Kathleen Van Brempt, who asked whether the Commission was considering proposing an EU-wide plastic bag ban.
Potocnik said his officials were “assessing various options to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags,” undertaking a cost-benefit analysis that took plastic marine pollution into account.
