Suzuki Motor Corp. claims it has developed a polypropylene that is 10 percent lighter than conventional PP used to make auto bumper components and is well suited to coloration.
Suzuki Super Polypropylene is rigid, has high impact strength and since it has no talc filler, can feature a wider range of colorants. Its properties are based on styrenic thermoplastic elastomer added to the PP resin.
Suzuki uses the new polymer on the front bumper of its Escudo off-road vehicle launched in Japan on July 11. The world premier Escudo model has a bright silver metallic finish made possible by the bright color of the new PP bumper component. The finish is achieved without painting, making it difficult to detect scratches. Eliminating paint also cuts out volatile organic compound emissions.
Suzuki said the new PP addresses needs to reduce vehicle weight and cut down on emissions from the use of paints.
