A new low-cost antimicrobial for extruded and injection molded thermoplastics has been debuted by PolyFusion LLC of Draper, Utah.
Master Batch PF100 is a permanently active silane functional quaternary ammonium salt that is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registered. Additive levels as low as 0.25 percent are effective for the antimicrobial ingredient priced at $32 per pound.
PolyFusion says the product kills microbes by physically rupturing cell walls. Because the kill mechanism doesn't involve absorption, the organism won't mutate and develop resistance to the antimicrobial. The firm further claims a very fast kill rate compared to biocides that are absorbed and act by disrupting metabolic pathways, such as silver-based and arsenic-based products and chlorinated phenolics.
Early tests have proved the antimicrobial in nylon, PVC, urethanes, polyethylene and PET. One early application is in aquaculture tubing that resists algae and plankton growth.
