SAN DIEGO (July 24, 12:15 p.m. ET) — Versalis SpA has signed a memorandum with San Diego-based Genomatica Inc. to produce bio-based butadiene.
Butadiene is used to produce rubber for tires, plastics, electrical appliances, pipes and latex.
The project will develop an end-to-end process of producing polymer—grade butadiene from biomass. Genomatica will provide technologies, while Milan, Italy-based Versalis will bring expertise in catalysis processes.
Versalis, a subsidiary of Enis SpA, will hold a majority stake in the partnership and is planning on building commercial plants.
