NORTHBROOK, ILL. (July 25, 2:45 p.m. ET) — Plastic materials information firm IDES Inc. has been sold to safety standards company Underwriters Laboratories Inc. for an undisclosed price.
The deal “is an exciting combination that is bearing fruit already,” IDES Managing Director Mike Kmetz said in a July 25 news release.
Northbrook-based UL also announced the next generation of the IDES Prospector-brand online service. Prospector now combines plastic materials data sheets and UL plastic identification reports in a single, searchable interface. The service is used by more than 319,000 industry professionals worldwide.
Prospector “gives UL a dynamic medium for converting our data into accessible intelligence that can inform and speed decisions throughout the plastics supply chain,” UL Senior Vice President Sara Greenstein said in the release.
Laramie, Wy.-based IDES was founded in 1986. UL opened for business in 1894 and employs 9,000 worldwide, offering testing in product safety, verification and related services.
