SUMMERVILLE, GA. (July 30, 3:45 p.m. ET) — There is no estimate yet to the amount of damage from an after-hours weekend fire at the plastics recycling plant of North Georgia Textile Supply Co. in Summerville that send flames and clouds of thick black smoke miles into the sky.
Chattooga County Emergency Management Agency director Eddie Henderson said residents from nearby homes were temporarily evacuated July 27 when the fire erupted, but that they were no reports of serious injuries or fire damage outside the privately owned plant, which recycles plastic materials for the carpet industry.
Owner Ed Ledford, whose company purchased the plant in 2003, was not immediately available for comment. No information was immediately available on the size of the plant or how many people the plant employed.
