Eclipse Magnetics Ltd. of Sheffield, England, produced a magnetic separation system for the United Kingdom's leading reprocessor of recyclable materials: the Eco-Plastics/Coca Cola Enterprises Ltd. joint venture plant in Hemswell, England,
The facility, Europe's largest mixed plastic bottle sorting operation, processes more than 140,000 metric tons of material each year, according to Eclipse Magnetics.
Eco-Plastics faced a problem on a new processing line for detergent bottlers, since many of the bottles are fitted with metal spring-loaded trigger mechanisms, which become fragmented during the granulating process. The metal can damage pelletizing equipment and wash systems, and cause batches of the final pellets to be rejected.
Eclipse's solution was a 300-millimeter Auto Rota Shuttle magnetic separation system, with high-intensity gauss magnetic rods to capture all metal fragments. The magnetic assembly rotates, ensuring that the granules are turned as they flow through the unit. This prevents bridging or blockages around the magnets.
