Biopolymers firm Cereplast Inc. says the company has received U.S. patent protection for high heat-resistance polymers containing polylactic acid.
The El Segundo, Calif., firm says conventional PLA has limitations in melt strength and heat resistance, which has limited its use in some applications. The new PLA compounds are industrially compostable and retain structural properties at temperatures higher than 165 degrees F, Cereplast claims.
“This new patent strengthens the company's leadership position in the bioplastics industry by protecting our intellectual property, and is in line with our long-term growth strategy as we continue to create grades of bioplastic resin that meet the demands of the marketplace,” Cereplast Chairman and CEO Frederic Scheer stated in a news release.
The U.S. patent number is 8,222,320.
