PET bottles are a growing market for Currier Plastics Inc., which is adding two more Aoki injection stretch blow molding machines to handle the demand.
Back in May, the Auburn, N.Y.-based injection molding and blow molding company joined with the state of New York to announce that it would spend $20.8 million to improve its infrastructure and build a 55,000-square-foot addition. Eventually, the new machines will be housed in the addition, but this fall, they will be installed in existing floor space at Currier.
“We make caps and some see the value of making the bottles and caps in the same spot,” said Gary Kieffer, vice president of new product development, in a telephone interview.
Currier actually added two Aoki machines in May and will install two more in the fall. The additions will give the company a total of six injection stretch machines.
One Aoki will be installed in late September, the other in late October, Kieffer said.
He credited Currier's customers that are winning increased market share and need more product.
Currier officials said they investigated different molding methods and settled on Aoki one-step machines for their efficiency and flexibility.
In May, the state announced that it would provide Currier with $1 million in tax credits and a $750,000 economic transformation grant from the Empire State Development Group to help construct the 55,000-square-foot manufacturing and storage facility, plus a new roadway for direct truck access.
At the time, Currier promised to add 50 new jobs over five years. It said that it employed 100.
The company expects the addition to be completed in 2013.
