WOBURN, MASS. (Aug. 15, 11:45 a.m. ET) — MuCell Extrusion LLC has signed a deal to acquire exclusive access to resin patents created by Styron LLC, a materials firm based in Berwyn, Pa.
Hot on the heels of licensing Dow Chemical Co.'s thin foamed films patent family, the agreement gives Woburn-based MuCell access to Styron's patents relating to the extrusion of Styrenic resins and exclusive rights to its patents relating to sheet technology, which can be used for what it calls “a wide range of applications.”
Speaking about the deal, MuCell President Mark Lindenfelzer said his company provided expertise in process and equipment development while Styron offered expertise in the formulation of resins.
“We believe this combination of our own patents and intellectual property and Styron's patents will bring benefits to our customers and will give them the opportunity to apply the most advanced foaming technology in their products,” he added.
John Case, Styron's global manager, Styrenics, said his company's technology provided opportunities particularly in the packaging market.
Dairy and food service industries could improve their sustainability “by reducing the density and weight of their product packaging, plus there are benefits in reduced energy and raw material usage, as well as lower packaging waste disposable tax in the European Union”, he added.
