Bayer MaterialScience LLC has developed an explosion barrier designed to protect exteriors of buildings and other structures.
Hygard is a polycarbonate sheet laminate system that can be tailored to protect against a range of threats by adjusting the number of PC sheet layers, the Pittsburgh, Pa., firm claims. Hygard Sentinel, for example, is a nine-layer laminate coextruded with a Texin thermoplastic polyurethane interlayer.
The Bayer system is mounted on a high-strength, energy-absorbing steel structure. The system could also provide a decorative appearance to new and retrofitted buildings.
A Bayer manager reported on Hygard at the International Conference on Structures Under Shock and Impact held Sept.4-6 in Kos, Greece.
