BASF Corp. is promoting grades of its Elastollan-brand thermoplastic polyurethane with improved flame retardance and heat performance.
Grades that have better flame retardance than existing Elastollan grades also have low smoke properties and zero halogen, BASF's Sarah Westerdal said at TPE Topcon, a conference hosted by the Society of Plastics Engineers, Sept. 11-12 in Akron.
The new grades also are easy to color and process and can provide smooth surfaces in semigloss or matte finishes, said Westerdale, who serves as elastomeric TPU wire and cable marketing manager for Florham Park, N.J.-based BASF.
Other attributes of the new TPU grades include low adhesion and good cold-temperature flexibility. Target applications for the new grades include brake cables in the transportation market and power cables used in alternative energy and industrial markets.
Elastollan TPU grades with improved heat performance are being aimed at hybrid and electric vehicles, which are placing new demands on wire makers, according to BASF product development specialist Mihai Manitiu.
The materials can withstand temperatures 77° F higher than previous Elastollan grades, Manitiu said at TPE Topcon. The new grades are vibration-proof, friction-proof and can provide good chemical resistance for battery cables and hydraulic and fuel lines.
Other applications for the new grades include two-component injection molding with nylon, where they can provide strong adhesive strength even after aging.
