Metabolix Inc. reports its new series of polyhydroxyalkanoate copolymers improves the mechanical and environmental performance of PVC.
Metabolix says a series of its PHA copolymers are miscible with PVC and can improve plasticization, impact and process modification of rigid and flexible PVC.
The Cambridge, Mass., firm claims that in plasticization, PHA acts as high molecular weight, readily dispersible plasticizers that provide low migration, low extractable and volatile loss and low staining.
For impact modification, PHA-rubber copolymers outperformed MBS modifiers and did not compromise transparency or UV stability, according to Metabolix.
As a processing aid, PHA adheres well to metal to promote homogeneous shear melting of PVC while preventing overheating and degradation.
Metabolix is presenting its results in a paper at the Society of Plastics Engineers VInyltec 2012 conference Oct. 24 in Chicago. Metabolix will begin producing the new PHA copolymers in Leon, Spain, in 2013.
