What does plastics recycling have to do with a meningitis outbreak tied to compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts? Careful readers of the news reports the past few weeks may have noticed a familiar name: Gregory Conigliaro. Conigliaro is a co-owner of New England Compounding Pharmacy Inc., the Framingham, Mass.-based company that does business as New England Compounding Center (NECC). His plastics connection: Conigliaro Industries Inc. Plastics News has quoted Conigliaro several times about various recycling projects, including a 1996 story about recycling hospital waste, a 1999 story about using old computer housings to make highway underlay and pothole filler, and a 2001 story about making blocks for retaining walls out of recycled plastic.
