HATTIESBURG, MISS. -- A tornado that hit Hattiesburg and other surrounding areas on Feb. 10 caused extensive damage to parts of the University of Southern Mississippi, but appears to have spared the university's polymer science building.
Local reports from Hattiesburg indicated that the university's Ogletree Alumni House was among the most severely damaged, with other buildings on the southern edge of USM's main campus also sustaining damage, the university said in a Feb. 11 news release.
The Thames Polymer Science Research Center is in a section of campus further to the north, adjacent to USM's sports facilities. Athletic officials at the university told local media that those buildings did not receive any damage in the storm.
