CELAYA, MEXICO — Sonoco Products Co. is building a $10.5 million plant in Celaya to produce molded foam products for its Sonoco Protective Solutions division.
The plant, which will have more than 200 employees when fully operational, should be completed by late 2013.
The plant will manufacture molded foam products for the automotive, appliance, aerospace, industrial and medical markets.
Sonoco is building the plant in response to demand from customers in the U.S. and Mexico.
"This new state-of-the-art plant in Celaya will allow us to better serve our customers in Central Mexico and better position us to capitalize on the tremendous growth that is occurring in the region," said Vicki Arthur, vice president of global protective solutions, in a March 15 news release.
Sonoco, based in Hartsville, S.C., has approximately 19,900 employees at 347 facilities across 34 countries. That includes Protective Solutions plants in Jalisco and Chihuahua, Mexico.
The firm had sales of more than $4.7 billion in 2012, including $38.8 million in sales from the Protective Solutions division, according to SEC filings.
