CLINTON, MASS. -- Nypro Healthcare is opening a new medical device manufacturing facility in Waterford, Ireland, that will create more than 200 jobs.
The expansion is a fresh indication that, despite the pending purchase of Nypro Inc. by Jabil Circuit Inc., the companies are not putting growth plans on hold.
“Nypro has operated in Ireland in Bray since 1980 and in recent years our healthcare business has grown significantly. Our latest growth phase is built upon the skills, work ethic, creativity and drive of our Nypro Ireland team. We now plan to create over 200 positions in Waterford to manufacture complex respiratory and injection devices for our pharmaceutical customers worldwide,” said James O'Gorman, Nypro's vice president for drug delivery and diagnostics, in a news release.
The company is buying and refitting an existing 210,000 square foot building in Waterford.
Nypro Inc., the Clinton, Mass.-based parent of Nypro Healthcare, had a facility in Waterford between 2001 and 2005 that molded products for the consumer and electronics sectors. But when that business moved to China, Nypro exited Waterford and sold the building.
The new Waterford site is about 100 miles from Nypro Ireland's base in Bray.
The announcement was made by Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and Richard Bruton, the minister for jobs, enterprise & innovation.
Kenny said the investment will boost the whole southeast section of the country and provide more job opportunities as the company grows. Among the positions Nypro is creating include healthcare automation engineers and technicians, healthcare quality engineers and technicians, operations managers, program managers, team leaders and operators.
Nypro spokesman Al Cotton said the healthcare area is growing rapidly for the company. He added that the firm is also in the midst of hiring 100 new workers in Clinton.
Results of Nypro employee owner voting on the Jabil deal will be announced April 2. Jabil expects to close the purchase by Aug. 31.
