Styron LLC has commercially introduced a polycarbonate/ABS blend that has Underwriters' Laboratories fire rating.
Emerge PC/ABS 7700 is cost effective for power equipment housings, consumer electronics, and medical device housings, where flammability rating is among the part's requirements. Styron of Berwyn, Pa., also claims the new blend has no chlorine or bromine additives.
"Ideally a molder would like to use the same material in a total design and this material integrates a number of performance attributes in a cost-effective solution," says Americas business leader Martin Lindway. He also says in a news release that the blend has a good balance of properties such as processability and color retention. Durability, toughness and thermal stability and the ability to make thin-wall parts are other attributes.
Styrone resins are sold by the company directly and through distribution partners PolyOne, Entec Polymers LLC and Channel Prime Alliance.
