Hormel Foods Corp., the company behind Spam, is giving the processed meat a UK packaging makeover to mark its 75th birthday. Starting in August Spam will be available in the United Kingdom in a resalable plastic tub.
The upgraded pack will be heralded by a six figure marketing campaign that will aim to promote Spam as a versatile meal option for a range of occasions. The 200 gram tub will retails for £1.79 and will be initially available through Tesco and Asda supermarkets.
According to Hormel Foods, the move into plastics is an industry first: "No major brand has offered a plastic tub as an easy opening format before." The hope is that the new packaging will attract new customers as well tempt back lapsed Spam fans.
Spam is manufactured under license in Europe by Tulip International A/S, which has its UK office in Warwick.
