Sulzer Metaplas in Amherst, N.Y., has developed a new physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating system for molds and dies used in plastics processing, to protect against wear and corrosion.
Many types of things can wear a mold, such as corrosion, abrasive wear or additives such as glass fibers or mica.
Sulzer Metco has installed a new Metalplas.Domino PVD coating system at its facility in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The system can create PVD hard coatings such as titanium nitride, aluminum titanium nitride and chrome nitride. Sulzer said the coatings have worked well in plastics and rubber processing, including the extrusion of polyethylene or polypropylene and other materials, as well as on injection molds for PET.
