Axel Plastics Research Laboratories Inc. says its two new process aids are aimed at injection molding of nylon cable ties and other small mechanical parts.
MoldWiz INT-PA33FRK, a liquid additive, and INT-38F, a pellet, allow production of parts in less time and with improved physical properties and appearance, according to Axel. They address the challenges of adequate resin flow and cavity fill, which can be problematic with thin and lengthy parts in multicavity molds. Processors can be tempted to push the resin to its highest possible process temperature bordering on its degradation point to ensure each mold cavity fills completely. High temperature can hurt physical properties and discolor parts.
Axel of Woodside, N.Y., said tests of the additives at 3 parts per thousand on a weight basis allowed resin injection at 10° F lower temperature and cycle time to be cut by 12.5 percent. These gains correlate to a 4 to 7 percent increase in number of parts molded.
