A group of Spanish companies, in partnership with the Spanish plastics research institute Aimplas, claim to have created a 100 percent biodegradable bottle for pharmaceutical applications.
Bio P Farm containers, which are suitable for creams, gels, shampoos and mouthwash, decompose into water, carbon dioxide, salts and biomass within a set period after manufacture.
"Nowadays, this type of packaging is only manufactured with high density polyethylene due to the requirements of the manufacturing process and the characteristics of the product," Paterna, Spain-based Aimplas said in a news release.
"From now, biodegradable materials can be used in these packages, preserving the properties of the product contained, and adding value from the environmental point of view."
