The Society of Plastics Engineers Automotive Division is adding a new category to its Automotive Innovation Awards competition for 2013, honoring achievements in electrical systems.
The new award will honor parts that make up the electrical infrastructure of electric or hybrid vehicles. Previously, electrical structures were placed under the powertrain division. The battery pack in General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Volt was a previous winner in that category.
SPE has selected finalists for the annual awards. The winners will be named during the Innnovation Awards & Gala on Nov. 6 in Livonia, Mich.
Nominated parts must be on vehicles that are in production during the 2013 calendar year. The award goes to the automaker.
