Spectral Evolution of Lawrence, Mass., said its SM-3500 portable spectrometer can identify plastics with no need for a sample, no shipments to the laboratory and no affect on the sample.
The SM-3500 can be used to identify plastics for recycling with no cross-contamination, sort polymer resins, measure purity of raw material and analyze moisture content.
The absorbance and reflectance of light results in the vibration of polymer resin molecules. The process works with a range of resins, including PET, high density polyethylene, PVC, polypropylene and polystyrene.
