The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has added polypropylene pipe for gravity flow sewer water applications to its latest publication of Ontario Provincial Standards.
Dual- and triple-wall PP pipe was incorporated into the new edition of specifications for sanitary and storm water sewer projects in addition to the already approved use of high density polyethylene pipe in diameters of 100 mm to 1,500 mm.
Some industry officials are lauding the change for giving Canadian municipalities more options in choosing infrastructure materials, including Ewout Leeuwenburg, senior vice president of international operations for Advanced Drainage Systems Inc., which is based in Hilliard, Ohio.
“This is an important advancement for greater, open competition for communities who want to maximize their systems as polypropylene pipe has been proven to reduce costs and extend service life,” Leeuwenburg said in a statement.
ADS makes PP sewer pipe products that meet the new standards. In Canada, ADS has pipe manufacturing plants in Ontario and Quebec. ADS also makes corrugated HDPE for storm and waste water systems.
