Natureworks LLC is teaming up with an Irish start-up firm to offer bioplastic fibers for fiber-extrusion 3D printing machines.
Natureworks contributes its Ingeo polylactic acid experience while 3Dom Filament Ltd. brings high-technology filament manufacturing to the table. 3Dom of County Donegal, Ireland, is an independent company formed to supply Ingeo filament to the additive-manufacturing market.
The collaboration is the first time Natureworks is licensing the Ingeo name and logo to the 3D printing industry.
“With Ingeo, 3Dom Filament Ltd. will help to ensure the availability of a PLA monofilament that meets quality standards and reduces filament related printing problems,” notes Dan Sawyer, Natureworks global leader for new business. “Natureworks is collaborating with custom compounders and additive suppliers, and we intend to develop further strategic relationships around the world to support the growing global 3D printing market.”
The higher the quality of the printer monofilament in terms of roundness, diameter and consistency, the better the results one gets from 3D printing, Natureworks explains. 3Dom uses continuous online laser scanning in its quality control system. The filament will be available in January.
