AKRON, OHIO — University of Akron polymer engineers were awarded $400,000 from the National Science Foundation to advance their research on a new class of sensors.
The group — led by Xiong Gong, assistant professor of polymer engineering — claims they developed a breakthrough in developing sensors for environmental monitoring, remote sensing, fiber optic communication, day and night surveillance and emerging medical imaging devices.
Gong said the sensors do not require cooling to function with highly sensitive detection capability, which results in low cost, multicolor, high efficiencies and high speed sensory with detection that spans from ultraviolet to infrared.
