Teknor Apex Co. has developed flame retardant thermoplastic elastomers for flexible electrical cords for power tools, appliances and specialty uses.
The Halguard E 59000 series gives performance similar to plasticized PVC but do not contain plasticizers. They also do not contain halogenated flame retardants as do polyolefin compounds in these applications. Grades in the series are inherently elastic.
Teknor claims the new series contain intumescent flame retardants rather than metal hydrate fillers in polyolefin products. Their flame retardance is similar to halogenated polyolefins but they have greater oil resistance, lower density, lower melt viscosity and higher elongation at break. They also avoid processing challenges posed by high loadings of metal hydrates, according to the Pawtucket, R.I., company.
Available grades address special needs for appliance cords, high-performance flame properties and insulation exposed to water.
