British firm NetComposites Ltd. is leading a multi-partner project to develop commercial methods of making graphene-reinforced thermosetting resins.
Graphene is an exotic form of carbon with a 2-dimensional atomic structure that improves strength, toughness and electrical and thermal conductivity in polymers. NetComposites is focusing on a cost-effective synthesis of graphene from graphite mineral and then incorporating graphene into low-viscosity thermosetting resins.
NetComposites of Chesterfield, England, leads the PolyGraph project for a consortium of companies interested in graphene reinforcements in composites, coatings and adhesives. The consortium comprises companies in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy and Sweden. They target a significantly lower cost of using graphene reinforcements.
