Vitro Minerals Inc. has debuted a synthetic, lightweight mineral for plastics and sealants that has 10 to 17 percent lower specific gravity than traditional fillers.
The Conyers, Ga., company says its WhiteLite aluminosilicate is made of 100 percent recycled materials, is free of crystalline silica and gives improved scratch resistance in automotive plastics such as nylon and polypropylene. WhiteLite is amorphous and has highly polar surfaces that react with coupling agents. Vitro claims the filler can reduced molded part weight by 4 to 7 percent at 40 percent loading.
