Milliken & Co. reports its Clear Tint polymeric colorants have been approved for broad food contact uses by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Milliken global product line manager Melissa Copeland says the approval allows the colorants in repeat-use applications and under a variety of conditions, including sterilization in boiling water, frozen storage and microwave cooking. Clear Tint products showed undetectable migration in standard tests, according to the Spartanburg, S.C., company.
The colorants, well suited for clarified polypropylene and high density polyethylene, are now allowed in products such as infant formula packaging and housewares used for feeding infants. Milliken claims the colorants provide high gloss and clarity and are non-nucleating.
