Plastic Technologies Inc. has moved closer to commercializing new PET bottle technology.
The Holland, Ohio, firm announced technology partnerships with Foboha GmbH of Haslach, Germany, and Ferromatik Milacron GmbH of Malterdingen, Germany, for PTI's Opti overmolded, lightweight foamed PET bottles. The Opti process is based on MuCell technology licensed from Trexel Inc.
PTI says the Opti process makes bottles with striking visual and tactile properties, allowing brand differentiation opportunities while also aiding recycling, according to PTI. It can also lower the amount of expensive colorants.
Foboha's cube mold system increases mold cavitation and reduces cost for overmolded parts, PTI explains. This helps boost production output for the Opti inner layer and an overmolded traditional PET outer layer bottle. By coupling Foboha's cube mold technology and Ferromatik Milacron's injection molding expertise, output is increased.
PTI says the dual-layer Opti structure presents new barrier possibilities.
