Xenia Materials says it has broadened the usefulness of plastomers, polymers that combine the characteristics of polyolefins with elastomers, by reinforcing them with carbon fiber.
Xenia has worked with the Queo ethylene-based plastomer from materials company Borealis AG. Queo exhibits flexibility, toughness, low-temperature impact resistance and clarity. Xenia of Vicenza, Italy, has made high performance composites by introducing the rigidity of carbon fiber into the plastomer to boost mechanical properties.
Xenia claims the new composite processes well and is cost-effective compared with other high-performance plastics.
