SCIGRIP, a maker of adhesives, sponsored the Polish Green Solar Team in the DONG World Cup Solar Power Challenge in the Netherlands, June 28-July 3.
SCIGRIP sponsored the team, provided technical advice and supplied structural bonding products for the boat. The company's two-component, high viscosity methacrylate adhesive was used to bond the largest and most critical joints, such as the bulkheads, engine column and floater beam sections. The product has a 10:1 mix ratio with cure rates ranging from 30-120 minutes, so the team had greater flexibility in building the boat, according to the company.
For applications with substrates have to bond and cure very quickly, such as the perimeter of the electrical box, SCIGRIP's SG300-05 was applied. A black formulation of the material also was used to bond the deck to the hull, which allowed the joint to blend seamlessly and be hidden from view. A white SG100 adhered the floats to the deck, and provide protection against ultraviolet light and prevent discoloration.
Participants in the DONG Energy Solar Challenge must complete a 250-kilometer staged course powered only by energy from the sun, and driven by solar panels.
