LyondellBasell Industries will build a world scale propylene oxide plant on the U.S. Gulf Coast with a capacity of 900,000 metric tons per year.
The facility, which will also produce tertiary butyl alcohol and its derivative, is scheduled to be operational in 2019. The project is expected to generate up to 1,200 construction jobs.
The PO, a polyurethane feedstock, will meet the growing demand for polyurethanes said the Houston-based company in a news release.
“While we have not finalized the exact location of the plant, the abundant natural gas liquids associated with shale gas make the U.S. Gulf Coast an advantaged feedstock region,” said Pat Quarles, LyondellBasell senior vice president intermediates and derivatives.
“This project combines our leading proprietary PO/TBA technology with low cost feedstock and demonstrates our continued commitment to capturing maximum advantage of market opportunities,” he added.
