Today Plastics News publishes its annual ranking of North American Film and Sheet Manufacturers. Let's look at some interesting numbers behind the ranking.
The big get bigger: In our film & sheet ranking alone, Sigma Plastics Group, Inteplast Group and Bemis Co. Inc. have each had eight acquisitions since 2003. Berry Plastics Corp. runs close with five.
This year's crop of includes Graphic Flexible Packaging LLC, which was acquired by Berry Plastics Corp.; Southern Film Extruders Inc. acquired by Sigma Plastics Group and Boltaron Performance Products LLC acquired by Simona America Inc.
By the numbers: There are 177 firms ranked this year with an average 2013 sales per company of $189.9 million. For those firms that supplied data here are a few more averages along with a comparison to last year: Average number of lines 20, up from 19 in last year's ranking. Average number of employees 349, down from 361. Average resin throughput: 83.9 million pounds annually, up from 78.2 million pounds.
The average number of plants is unchanged at 3.2 per company.

Bloomer Plastics Inc. of Bloomer, Wis., moves up 20 spaces to rank at No. 80.
Walton Plastics Inc. of Walton Hills, Ohio, moves up 18 spaces to rank at No. 126.
Wisconsin Film & Bag Inc. of Shawano, Wis., moves up 17 spaces to rank at No. 80.
Bio Packaging Films LLC of Mundelein, Ill., moves up 13 spaces to rank at No. 148.
Profile Industrial Packaging Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich., moves up 11 spaces to rank at No. 109.
Imaflex Inc. of Montreal, Quebec, moves up 10 spaces to rank at No. 89.
Mid South Extrusion Inc. of Monroe, La., moves up 9 spaces to rank at No. 68.
Plaskolite Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, moves up 9 spaces to rank at No. 24.
Crayex Corp. of Piqua, Ohio, moves up 9 spaces to rank at No. 80.
Marshall Plastic Film of Martin, Mich., moves up 9 spaces to rank at No. 127.
