New vinyl extrusion compounds from Teknor Apex Co. provide a textured surface without secondary steps such as top coating or milling.
Apex 1545-D40 ST is mainly aimed at exterior automotive trim and molding, where it allows textured surfaces to remain blemish-free after prolonged outdoor exposure. The Pawtucket, R.I., company says the compounds can be coextruded and bond well to metal. The physical properties are comparable to standard PVC and Teknor Apex can color them to match many OEM standards, including black.
The homogeneous, scratch-resistant finish of the extruded compounds resists harsh weathering, notes Teknor Apex's vinyl division automotive industry manager Steve McCormack. Properties include Shore C and D hardnesses of 60 to70 and 34 to 44, respectively, specific gravity of 1.37 to 1.43, tensile strength of 8 to 18 megapascals and elongation at break of 150 to 250 percent.
