A global supplier of automotive turbocharging systems has turned to DuPont Co.'s Vespel polyimide to improve the performance of its pneumatic wastegate actuators in many turbocharger applications.
Vespel withstands the difficult operating conditions of motor vehicle engine turbochargers.
The manufacturer of the turbocharger uses a DuPont Vespel bushing that provides consistent friction and low wear for the life of the turbocharger in a hot, dirty environment.
The bushing needs no lubrication, which helps assure precise functioning of the turbocharger's control system. The wastegate actuator controls the pressure of exhaust gases to correspond to vehicle driving conditions. The actuator reaches operating temperatures often exceeding 400° F.
The grade used in this application is Vespel SP-21, with a heat deflection temperature of 648° F. It can stand up to aggressive exhaust gases during long-term heat exposure. DuPont also supplies a range of Vespel semi-finished shapes.
