Lehvoss North America has upped performance of polymers in automotive gears. Plastics replace metal in many auto gears because of design freedom, noise reduction and processability, Lehvoss explains.
Luvocom 1-8181 and 8520 are nylon 66 compounds reinforced with carbon fibers and impact modifiers to help gear wheels resist high stresses of under-the-hood applications. Operating temperature of the materials can reach 240-302° F, depending on service life of the gear.
The Pawcatuck, Conn., company claims strength of the new compounds is 80 percent higher than for standard nylon 66. Impact strength meets or exceed the needs of many gear wheels, according to Lehvoss.
