ExxonMobil Chemical Co. will officially close its office in Akron, Ohio, by the end of the year, the company said in a letter to the state dated March 27.
The company announced plans to expand its Houston campus back in June 2012, noting that employees at certain locations, including the Akron office, would be relocated there in 2014 and 2015.
The Akron site was the onetime offices for Advanced Elastomer Systems.
The letter said the Akron relocations began in late February and will continue through May. Fewer than 50 employees will lose their jobs with ExxonMobil because of the Akron closure, as many decided to relocate to Houston, the letter said. The lease on the Akron location expires Dec. 31, 2015.
A message left for the company's media relations office was not immediately returned.
