It seemed like one was not like the others.
President and CEO of Cascade Engineering Mark Miller was giving Publisher Brennan Lafferty and myself an overview of the injection molders' 11 different divisions when he came to HydrAid. The product is a water filter aimed at giving safe drinking water to those in impoverished countries.
There are more than 50,000 HydrAid filters in use in 35 developing countries, providing clean drinking water to over 500,000 people.
Giving safe drinking water isn't typically the job of private corporations, and Miller said the bottom line on that division isn't the profit — it's how many people they are helping.
But Miller didn't mince words when I asked him why they are in a business traditionally done by non-profits:
“We believe … for-profits can operate more efficiently and more effectively,” Miller said.
Above is a bonus clip of the conversation we had with Miller during our visit for the What Keeps You Up at Night feature.
