Master Lock Co. will shutter SentrySafe facilities in Rochester, N.Y., and Cannelton, Ind., in 2016 and move most functions to Oak Creek, Wis., and Nogales, Mexico.
The company said in an emailed statement that the change will come in stages beginning in January, with all functions, with the exception of national sales managers, to cease operations by June 2016.
“This decision has been made to help us remain competitive in the marketplace as we optimize our operational footprint by consolidating locations and adding meaningful scale to our other existing facilities,” said the statement.
SentrySafe, which was founded in 1930, produces fire-resistant chests, files, safes and security storage containers. Many of them contain plastic components.
The company had been a long-time family-run company in Rochester. It was purchased by Master Lock in July 2014.
Master Lock said that it had informed the 350 employees of the news far in advance and will provide severance and job placement services. It also said that it had some open positions in Oak Creek and other opportunities and has offered positions to some of the employees.
Master Lock is an operating unit of Fortune Brands Home & Security Inc., a consumer products company headquartered in Deerfield, Ill. A spokeswoman for Fortune Brands said Master Lock “will continue to trust and rely on our suppliers to provide us with great service and quality at competitive prices. At this time we don't anticipate many changes to our supplier base. As any decisions are made over the next year, we will inform suppliers.”
